An easy hike that will take you to one of the most beautiful summits in the Monts d'Ardèche  Park. From the Champ de Mars, the 360-degree view is stunning.
This walk will take you to the summit called Champ de Mars, natural belvedere in the Monts d'Ardèche Park. In the oc language, cham means a bare, rocky plateau. At the end of the XVIIIth century, land surveyors "corrected" the orthography and it became this "champ" de Mars. From this plateau, you will see the geological modeling of the Monts d'Ardèche Park. In fine weather, it shows its frame : a grand amphitheatre outlined by the Cévennes, the Auvergne volcanos, the Vercors and the Alps. From up there, the presence of men seems very discreet ; however, along the path, you will discover their footprints in the landscape, left by forestry,  pastoralism, or blueberry cultivation.

Description

  1. At the beginning, the track forms large meanders in the woods for a few hundred metres.
  2. After the fifth curve, leave the track and take a narrow path on your right going into the undergrowth. Follow carefully the white and yellow markings on this path that alternates between beech woods and blueberry fields.
  3. At the crossways, take the direction of "Le Champ de Mars". Once on the flat at the top, go left to the viewpoint indicator offering a 360-degree panorama on the Monts d'Ardèche Park and the Alps. Do not hesitate to walk around the summit to enjoy all the sights, especially the one on the Mézenc-Gerbier range, but be sure to stay on the trodden paths.
  4. To come back, retrace your steps.
  • Departure : Follow the road D122 for 50 m towards le Gerbier, cross it, follow the white and yellow markings. Turn left on the track uphill
  • Towns crossed : MARCOLS-LES-EAUX
